Hip Waders? Check!

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

Wow! Manitobans are quick to help! Yet another project was quickly checked off the list just days after posting it on the web! Choo Choo of LoveCanadaGeese.com purchased hip waders for PWRC. Thanks Choo Choo for making it easier to caputre sick, injured and orphaned wildlife!

Hip Waders (great big rubber pants with boots attached to them) are great for capturing animals in the spring and summer. Often we find sick, injured and orphaned geese, ducks, and other animals who escape to the water where they feel more safe. Once this happens, capturing them becomes much less likely. Hip Waders are a great way to break this barrier!

Latest Project Completed

Saturday, January 28th, 2009

One tough job that PWRC volunteers face every year is the capturing of Canada Geese. Whether they have a broken wing or are tangled in fishing wire, the geese can run fast. That's why rehabbers have to come up with strategic ways to capture them. One way is to gather many volunteers and corner the geese using fishing nets. The fishing nets are also useful for capturing other wildlife.

We began a fundraising project to raise money for the fishing nets, and only days later Rick of Nu Sun Cinema completely covered the costs to purchase these nets. Thanks Rick for helping our Canada Geese!

A Unique Artistic Presentation

Wednesday, December 2, 2009

PWRC took part in a unique artistic presentation with talented Winnipeg Artist, Kal Barteski. We joined her for the exclusive and intimate release of her newest collection of paintings, sketches and prints titled "I found my wings". An artist's tribute and a mother's journey back to the passions that gave her wings. Our wildlife ambassadors took part in the presentation as special guests! It was a memorable occasion!

PWRC gets a giant boost for it's education program

Friday, September 25th, 2009

We are extremely pleased to announce that after the hard work put in by the PWRC volunteers we have acquired a large grant to launch a full education program. The Winnipeg Foundation has notified us that they have generously contributed to the cost of running our extensive program!

Our educational presentations are suitable for anyone aged 2 to 100! A list of available presentations is available here. Every presentation is also accompanied by a visit from one of our Educational Ambassadors.

When incorporated into classrooms of Manitoba schools, we anticipate that our educational presentations will make an impression on the students and create a lasting memory, one that will influence the choices they make in the future. Our presentations diversify the regular day-to-day school experience and show students how the material they learn in school relates to the "real world" with the presentations being curriculum-adaptable.

After Amazing Recovery, Barred Owl Returns to the Wild

Saturday, August 22nd, 2009

PWRC volunteers have finally released a Barred Owl back into the wild at Barrier Bay Resort in Whiteshell Provincial Park.

This Barred Owl was found at Falcon Lake, where he collided with a car. Upon his arrival at PWRC he appeared to be very close to death. He was twitching with severe head trauma. Often when we get animals in such condition we are unsure whether they will survive, but with help from our wildlife rehabbers he pulled through!

Release events are one way PWRC volunteers can celebrate their accomplishments! Make sure to check our website frequently so you can attend one of these events!

Watch the video of his release!
